The Town of Minden Town Board recently initiated a project to develop a new town comprehensive plan. Over the next year, the Minden Planning Board will be working to develop the plan for the town. A comprehensive plan is a written document written locally to guide future growth and community development. The Town has a comprehensive plan that was adopted in May 1999 but it needs to be updated to make sure it reflects current conditions in Minden. Development and adoption of the new plan will follow the procedures outlined in New York State Town Law. The Town has hired Community Planning & Environmental Associates as a planning consultant to assist the Planning Board in this task.
The project will be organized to accomplish three steps. The first is to understand the current conditions in the Town of Minden. This will include a complete inventory and analysis of the resources, conditions, land uses, and growth patterns in town, as well as creation of new maps. This step will help the Planning Board understand the strengths and weaknesses of the town to be addressed in the plan. The second step is to understand what the residents and landowners want for the Town in the future. This step is based on public input and the Planning Board will start this by analyzing a 2009 written survey that was conducted with town residents. In the coming months, the Planning Board will also host a community meeting and focus groups to learn more about what the desired future is. Finally, the third step is to determine what the Town can do to help it attain that future vision. This steps results in a set of actions, strategies, policies, and programs that Minden can implement over time.
